Frequently Asked Questions (back to top)

1) What is a Zip file, and how do I use it?

2) Now that I've downloaded one of the tab delimited text files, how do I import it into a spreadsheet application?

1) A .zip file is a file that puts one or more files into a package and cuts down the file size. This makes for more efficient downloading. If you are trying to access .zip excel files in the Download Center, you first, need to have WinZip. Click here to download WinZip. [Detailed Instructions for installing WinZip - When you click the link above and are at that link, Click Download Now. Wait until you are prompted by a box. Click Open. When it finishes downloading it will Install. Just click Next on all of the Default settings until it is successfully installed.] Once you have WinZip on your computer, go to the Download Center. Choose the station that you wish to download under the Excel Files (Zipped) list. Once you have clicked the data that you want you will be prompted by a box. Click Save, and save the zip file to a location that you are familiar with. (If you don't know where to save it to, just save it to the desktop.) Once it is finished downloading, click Open on the download box that just finished, or just go to the location of where it downloaded on your computer, and double click the .zip file. When you have the file open, WinZip will come up. Click I Agree to proceed. Your file will be listed. You can either double click your file and view it right away, or you can click Extract, and you can extract (put) the file to any location that you specify. You now know how to successfully download .zip files from the Download Center. (back to questions)

2. Choose File-->Open
3. Set the file type dropdown menu to text files and select your downloaded file
4. Select Tab as the delimter and click finish.

For Quattro

2. Set file type to ASCII Text and select the downloaded file
3. Set Parse settings to Delimited Auto and click OK. (back to questions)

Troubleshooting (back to top)

Problem: I'm either getting no data or the wrong data when I select a station.
Possible Solution/Advice: Check in your Layers menu (to the right of your map) and make sure that the appropriate layer is checked as active. If you are trying to access data from a Creekwatchers station then you must have the Creekwatchers layer marked as active. Remember, even though multiple layers are visible at one time, you can only access data from the active layer. Once the appropriate layer is active try making your selection again. The select by rectangle toolis the easiest selection tool to use. First click on this tool in the toolbar (to the left of your map) to ensure it is selected and the click and hold your mouse button as you drag over your map to create a selection box. When the box covers the area you desire release the mouse button to make your selection.

Problem: Map Viewer running extremely slow or freezing up.
Possible Solution/Advice: How fast is your internet connection? If you are using standard dial up then the mapservices are going to load and run slower than they would on a cable modem or faster connection. Have a little patience and hopefully things will load. If you make too many mouse clicks while the computer is still processing previous requests the map viewer may freeze up. Try to wait until one process is completed before making another request. If you experience really long delays please email us and let us know. We have tried to optimize run times as much as possible, but dialup will still be slow and we don't know how our server is going to handle the workload as sight traffic increases. We will try to continue to make improvements to keep things running at an optimum level.
