SBI Phase I Organizational Meeting
WESTERN ARCTIC SHELF-BASIN INTERACTIONS (SBI)
UPDATE MARCH 22, 1999
The Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions (SBI) program has been developed to improve our knowledge and understanding of shelf-basin exchange and will lead to an enhanced predictive capability for global change impacts in the Arctic. The SBI program will include field and modeling studies directed at elucidating the underlying physical and biological shelf and slope processes that influence the structure and functioning of the Arctic Ocean. The SBI program is going forward in three phases. Phase 1 involves regional historical data analysis, opportunistic field investigations, and modeling. Phase 2 constitutes the core regional field investigations in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, along with continued regional modeling efforts. Phase 3 will investigate global change ramifications on the ecosystems of the Arctic shelves and basin. This phase will involve development of a Pan-Arctic model (including embedded regional submodels) suitable for exploring "what-if scenario" studies related to global change. Further information on the SBI program can be found in the SBI science plan (Grebmeier, J.M. et al (eds.), 1998, Arctic System Science Ocean-Atmosphere-Ice Interactions Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions Science Plan, ARCSS/OAII Report Number 7, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, 65 pgs.)
PHASE I IN PROGRESS
A total of 18 Phase I Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interaction (SBI) projects have been funded, with 31 PI and co-PI's and various international collaborators. Funded projects include retrospective, experimental and modeling studies in fields of biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography. Table 1 lists the PI/co-PI's, project titles, and collaborators.
The SBI Phase I Organizational Meeting is planned for October 23, 1999 following the OAII All Hands meeting in Virginia Beach, VA. The meeting is open to the scientific community. The agenda for this SBI meeting will include brief updates on funded SBI Phase 1 projects and identification of areas for collaboration. The afternoon session will include a discussion of a draft Phase II implementation plan (currently being developed by the SBI Science Steering Committee), including an outline of core measurements, sampling platforms and timeline for the program. Subsequently, a revised draft Phase II implementation plan will be posted on the SBI web page (currently under development) for community comment. Planning has also started for the first international biennial pan-Arctic SBI meeting to be held in the year 2000.
Further information can be obtained from Jackie Grebmeier, Director of the SBI Project Office.
